Player Progression Mythbusters

Does anyone truly know how player progression works? There are just to many grey areas for example:

*If u edit a player's ratings before you begin a franchise will that player still progress when u complete an entire season?

*If you change a players position will they still progress properly.

*Does it matter if u win awards like MVP or Rookie of the year?

*Does the offensive line progress and if so is it completely random?

*How do Rookies progress?

*How does progression work in general? Does anyone know if stats effect progression like in anyway?

*Does editing equipment effect progression.

1. Yes

2. Yes (depending on what you define "properly" as...many are dissatisfied with progression still...but it does work as well here as in any other scenario.

3. No. Awards don't seem to directly matter. The level of play to earn the awards are the deciding factor for progression.

4. Yes and Yes (it does appear to be random...though there are certain guys, excluding injury scenarios, I've seen progress at least a little no matter what)

5. Rookies seem to progress the most. Some a lot, some a little.

6. Stats do effect progression. It's not as much of a factor as in years past, I don't think, but it does seem to be a factor.

7. No...not since the patch.

The problem is that there is hardly any regression. After a couple of season you will have too many highly rated players.

True. The only regression I see is from injuries or the rare guys getting their 100 rating knocked down to 99. Pretty scarce.

I see regression in few, in my Packers franchise. Atari Bigby, Johnny Jolly and Tramon Williams always regressed 1 point, even if they had great years.

Some progress a ton, some don't seem to progress at all.

In my franchise, I have two rookie WRs, Desean Jackson (Cal) and Earl Bennett (Vanderbilt).

Desean Jackson is my starter, breaking all sorts of records in receptions and receiving yards. He also lines up as tailback sometimes and rushes for a few TDs. In three years he's stayed at like 78 overall.

Earl Bennett is a 3rd stringer, his production is average at best, and in three years he rockets from like 79 overall to 88 overall, now his rating is a full 10 points ahead of Desean.

Inexplicable.

Although, Desean is still far more fun to use because he starts out with such high acceleration, agility and evasion. Earl Bennett and his 96 speed and 99 catching and superior route-running ain't taking over that starting spot soon.

Re: Player Progression Mythbusters

I asked this on the NCAA forum: Why do you guys think proper progression should be?

Should the next year's ratings reflect what next year's game would show? So if Desean Jackson has a great year, we may expect him to be about an 87 or so next year based off his stats....should franchise do something similar?

What about the bench guys that learn by watching...how should they progress? Carson Palmer sat and watched for a year and progressed great.

Should it be a combination of both? Should guys have hidden potential ratings?

I see a lot of complaining about progression but there's no real formula for what it should look like.

Re: Player Progression Mythbusters

After the first season there are 12 players that progress to a 99 speed rating. After season 2, there are 30 players with a 99 speed rating. Players routinely jump up 4-5 points in the speed category. Matt Forte after 2 seasons, 99 speed. So now in my franchise Devin Hester and Matt Forte are the same speed. AWESOME!

I've tested this in four different franchises and two different roster files. (The most recent EA update and ReBirth's rosters) The results are always the same, reguardless of stats. 11-12 99's in offseason 1, and over 30 in the 2nd offseason.

Another issue with progression/regression. They effectively made progression substantial, while regression is still minimal. Example; players will jump anywhere from +1 to +10 in overall when they progress, mostly in the 3-5 range. Whereas when a player regresses, he only drops 1 point, 2 at the most (very rare). So after two seasons your franchise is completely juiced up, and all of the teams are more or less the same talent level.

Something else that I've found to be true, players progress the most when they are in their first 3 years. When in the first three years of a career, a player will progress as much as 9-10 overall points. It's usually in the range of 1-5 points though. After three years in the league, the most you will see a player progress is 3 points, but usually no more than just 1 overall point. Same for regression, players will only regress 1 or 2 overall points. Also age has absolutely no affect on progression, the only thing that affects progression, as far as experience, is years in the league. An example of that is a player that is 32 years old but only 2 years in the league will still have a potential for a 3-5 point increase (or even more).
