All New Match Types in WWE 2K25

Three new match types to be featured in WWE 2K25.

When it comes to video games, WWE is kind of at a crossroads. Following the disaster that was WWE 2K20 — which made our list of the worst wrestling games ever released — 2K and Visual Concepts have managed to bounce back with a run of pretty decent wrestling games. All games since 2K22 have ranged from solid to pretty good. But now, with WWE on a hot streak when it comes to the popularity of its on-air product a lot is riding on the upcoming WWE 2K25 to push the envelope and be the best wrestling game it can possibly be. And a lot of that will come down to its new features such as match types.

Though it won’t be introducing a ton of match variations, WWE 2K25 has announced that this year will mark the inclusion of three brand new match types that are sure to excite its player base, both old and new. These three new match types are as follows.

All New Match Types In WWE 2K25

Intergender Matches

As it was alluded to in the lead-up to the game’s reveal, WWE 2K25 will feature intergender matches. This marks the first time a WWE game has allowed both male and female talent to compete directly against one another since the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw era of games.

Allowing for intergender matches opens up a ton of possibilities for WWE 2K25 players when making dream matches. Do you want Rhea Ripley to beat the daylights out of Dominik Mysterio for his past transgressions? Do you want a rematch of Penta vs. Iyo Sky from back in their Lucha Underground days? Well, these scenarios are now possible due to the inclusion of intergender competition.

We talked about it a little bit in our piece on the Easter eggs found in the reveal trailer, but it’s official now — WWE 2K25 will give players the opportunity to compete in an Underground match.

Introduced in 2020, the Underground match pits two WWE Superstars against each other in a match that feels like a mixture of an MMA contest and something you’d see in Fight Club, all with a pro wrestling twist. To drive home the bare-knuckles feel of the match, the ring ropes are removed and other wrestlers line the apron to ensure the fight is kept on the mat.

Though “Raw Underground” certainly didn’t have the impact it wished it did, the Underground match is a welcome inclusion into WWE 2K25.

Bloodline Rules

As expected given the title’s focus on Roman Reigns and the Bloodline stable, WWE 2K25 will allow players to have a Bloodline Rules match. In practice, a Bloodline Rules match is simply a no-holds-barred match between two wrestlers, so it’s unknown what Visual Concepts has done to differentiate the two match types. But we can make a guess!

The difference between a Bloodline Rules match and a typical no-DQ contest to has been the copious amounts of outside interference and ref bumps featured in the former. In order to preserve the essence of the Bloodline Rules match, there must be options applied to allow for Superstar-specific interference and other WWE tomfoolery. But, we’ll see.

These are the new match types that will be introduced in WWE 2K25. Be sure to stay tuned to Operation Sports for more news on WWE 2K25, as well as any of your other favorite sports games!
