At this stage of MLB The Show 24, most Diamond Dynasty players should have accrued enough cards to start filling out their god squads. But if you’re wondering how you should possibly build out your team, maybe you should apply a Captain boost.
What makes Captain boosts important (at least at times) in MLB The Show 24 is that they can either overpower an already good card, or turn a lesser card that you have a fondness for into a viable option. But what boosts should you be using?
Here are the best Captain Boosts in MLB The Show 24 Diamond Dynasty.
The Best Captain Boosts In MLB The Show 24 Diamond Dynasty
Jeremy Pena – Shortstop Captain
It wouldn’t be a list of the best Captain boosts in MLB The Show 24 without mentioning the Shortstop boost provided by Jeremy Pena. The final unlockable Captain in the first Captain Blizzard promo, Pena’s card provides buffs to contact, speed, and batting clutch to any player who has shortstop as a primary or secondary position. The tiers are as follows:
- Tier 1 Boost (5 players): +5 Contact vs. RHP, +5 Batting Clutch, +3 Speed
- Tier 2 Boost (8 players): +10 Contact vs. RHP, +10 Batting Clutch, +5 Speed, +5 Fielding Ability
- Tier 3 Boost (11 players): +15 Contact vs, RHP, +15 Batting Clutch, +8 Speed
What makes the Shortstop Captain Boost so desirable is its ability to impact some of the most versatile players in the game and be used simultaneously with other Captains, such as the Negro Leagues
Lou Brock – Action Figure Captain
Released during Season 2, the Action Figure card series features a plethora of great baseball legends that many players should enjoy using such as Tom Seaver, Tim Raines, and a prime Giancarlo Stanton (the one with knees) among others. Anchored by “The Franchise” Lou Brock — who can be unlocked in the Captain Blizzard Drop 2 program — the Action Figure Captain boost is divided into three tiers:
- Tier 1 (7 players): +5 Contact vs. LHP, +3 Power vs. RHP, +3 Speed, +5 BB Per 9
- Tier 2 (10 players): +10 Contact vs. LHP, +7 Power vs. RHP, +5 Speed, +10 BB Per 9
- Tier 3 (13 players): +15 Contact vs. LHP, +10 Power vs. RHP, +10 Speed, +15 BB Per 9
David Ortiz – 2000s Hitters Captain
The 2000s Hitter Captain boost provided by David Ortiz provides one of the most potent boosts when it comes to hitting. Don’t believe me? Look at these tiers:
- Tier 1 (5 hitters) : +10 Contact vs. RHP, +10 Power vs. RHP, +15 Batting Clutch, +5 Contact vs. LHP
- Tier 2 (8 hitters): +15 Contact vs. RHP, +15 Power vs. RHP, +20 Batting Clutch, +10 Contact vs. LHP
- Tier 3 (11 hitters): +20 Contact vs. RHP, +20 Power vs. RHP, +25 Batting Clutch, +15 Contact vs. LHP
These are some monstrous hitting buffs. And the players this captain boost effects is just as impressive. Some of the notable names that are eligible for the 2000s Hitters Captain Boost are Finest Chase Utley, Finest Jorge Posada, Milestone Jimmy Rollins, and Hall of Fame Adrian Beltre — just to name a few. What more could you want?
Hilton Smith – Negro Leagues Captain
Celebrating the unsung heroes prior to the breaking of the color barrier in MLB with the Brooklyn Dodgers’ signing of Jackie Robinson in 1947, the Negro Leagues Captain boost provided by two-way player Hilton Smith is one the best in the game. Not only does it cover Negro Leagues legends such as Josh Gibson, Buck O’Neil, and Satchel Paige, but it also gives a buff to any player that played in the Negro Leagues at any point such as Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Ernie Banks. The tiers are as follows:
- Tier 1 (4 players): +5 Contact vs. RHP, +5 Batting Clutch, +5 Speed, +5 Hits Per 9
- Tier 2 (6 players): +10 Contact vs. RHP, +10 Batting Clutch, +10 Speed, +10 Hits Per 9
- Tier 3 (8 players): +15 Contact vs. RHP, +15 Batting Clutch, +15 Speed, +15 Hits Per 9
My absolute favorite thing about this boost is that it can be stacked with the Shortstop Captain boost because of how versatile a lot of the Negro Leagues players are. For instance, Martin Dihigo — a pitcher who can play any position on the field — gets his respectable hitting stats nearly maxed out if using a Tier 3 Shortstop and Negro Leagues boost. And if you haven’t tried him yet, please do so as he has easily one of the sweetest swings in the game.
Corbin Carroll – Season 2 Cornerstone Boost
At one point, it would’ve been a crime to not include the Carlos Santana Switch Hitters Captain on this list. But since its justified nerfing, the Corbin Carroll Cornerstone Captain from Season 2 has fully overtaken it in my opinion. Corbin’s boost works perfectly for anyone who prefers speed on their team, as it gives contact, vision, and reaction buffs to players who have at least an 84 rating in that category pre-Parallel. Here are the tiers:
- Tier 1 (6 hitters): +5 Contact vs. RHP, +5 Contact vs. LHP, +5 Plate Vision, +5 Reaction Time
- Tier 2 (9 hitters): +10 Contact vs. RHP, +10 Contact vs. LHP, +10 Plate Vision, +10 Reaction Time
- Tier 3 (12 hitters): +15 Contact vs. RHP, +15 Contact vs. LHP, +15 Plate Vision, +15 Reaction Time
I find this boost works best on are guys like Daulton Varsho or Byron Buxton — players who both have great utility but lack the contact to consistently get on base.
These are the best Captain boosts in MLB The Show 24. Experiment with some of them while you’re grinding for those Now & Later packs.
