Max Plays CFB has been a go-to source for using data to get the most out of recruiting in College Football 25. I’ve showcased his videos in two other big recruiting guides I’ve put together, and he’s back with another very useful tip for how to predict overall rating by simply focusing on star rating and position.
In the video, Max details the simple formula that he’s using to predict a player’s OVR rating within two points by simply focusing on the position and star rating of any high school player at any position. While sorting by national rank has obviously been one way to go through recruits, that national rank may not mean very much — at least not as it relates to initial overall rating.
Max does not say national rank means nothing as it relates to what abilities or gem/bust status could mean because that’s not what he was tracking, but I tend to agree with him that it’s likely that the national rank probably doesn’t play a huge role in those areas either. Instead, the national rank is there as another way to sort prospects, but beyond that, it’s a bit of a red herring that will distract you from what really matters when searching for quality players.
So what does this all mean? Ultimately, it just opens up recruiting that much more. There is still a focus on scouting and finding gems or players with individual ratings you like, but especially once you reach those 3-star players, it means those willing to put in the time to look at the 1,200th rated prospect (who is a 3-star) rather than just the 600th nationally ranked 3-star prospect will end up putting together the stronger recruiting classes.
One other thing it means is that as the recruiting season drags on, searching for players with no scholarships being offered should matter more and more. In this situation, you’ll be assured that those prospects you end up finding late can still be as good as those other players from the 3-star level who were recruited weeks ago.
If you want to use this simple formula, Max has a Google Sheet that you can make a copy of and utilize in order to predict overall ratings for players you’re scouting and recruiting.
