Lightning Yordan Alvarez put a cap on the June Monthly Awards Program, and now we’re finishing off the July Monthly Awards and Topps Now player drops with Lightning Austin Riley. On top of that, there are a whole host of July Monthly Awards players to now grab.
July Topps Now (Week 1)
- Topps Now Darick Hall
- Topps Now Mark Appel
- Topps Now Andres Gimenez
- Topps Now Chad Kuhl
- Topps Now Michael Perez
The whirlwind tour for Appel continues as he now has a Topps Now card. The pitch mix is meh, but the stats are good at least. Michael Perez is the other player to note here as his Supercharged card was a big hit, so I suspect this card will get some looks from folks. For me, I’ve enjoyed using Live Series Andres Gimenez, so I’ll look into that card.

- 160 points – Lightning Craig Biggio
Lightning Craig Biggio means an elite Biggio is coming back to us soon enough. Since this card does have a catcher secondary, he’s going to have some life even at the end of the month. I also think Biggio having extra power here is a rather big deal because sometimes that can be a weakness for his cards. Either way, he’s generally been a popular card through the years (and that includes with me as well), so I’m looking forward to using him. We do have more 2B and C options than we did weeks ago, but he’s still going to classify as a five-tool threat, especially if you do go with him behind the plate.
- 165 points – The Show pack (x5)
- 170 points – 2,500 stubs
- 175 points – Home Run Derby choice pack
- 180 points – All-Star Game choice pack
- 185 points – Lightning Monthly Awards Austin Riley
Because Lightning Austin Riley got his 1B and LF secondary positions, any concerns about this card mostly dissipate. You should absolutely be able to find a place for him, and he’s another right-handed bat who will provide great all-around hitting, solid defense, and just enough speed to not be a liability. This was the right choice for the player of the month as well, which hasn’t always been the case for SDS this year.
