EA Sports College Football 25 Number Locks on Generated Prospects Should Be Lifted

No game is immune to the “eternal cycle” here on OS, and this means even EA Sports College Football 25 is reaching that point where some of the negatives start to crop up, and one that is really sticking with the community during pre-release is the inability to edit the numbers on prospects who enter dynasty mode.

Of course, I’m acting like you know what the “eternal cycle” is, but if you don’t, it’s basically the cycle of pre-release hype where nothing bad could ever happen slowly turning into some negativity, ultimately culminating with a little dash of panic before we mostly go back to talking like normal humans where we mention positives and negatives like adults. We’re speedrunning the cycle a bit because the hype for EA Sports College Football 25 is so immense, but the number locks on generated prospects in EA Sports College Football 25 is a peculiar issue, which is why I’m highlighting it now.

We’ve kept close tabs on what the limits to player editing will be in EA Sports College Football 25, and most of us are very understanding about why the real players won’t be able to be edited. Legal issues are a burden, and EA legal is trying to dodge bullets. But it’s less clear what’s going on with generated prospects and the limits there. Not The Expert posted a great video on YouTube yesterday showing off the first year of a dynasty mode.

In that video, he shows off the fact that you can edit basically everything about generated prospects but their faces and numbers (and maybe player attributes but that’s still technically TBD). The player faces not being touchable seems to be a non-issue for most because the new generated faces look so much better than in the past.

And, in general, the numbering issue might be a small detail for many, but it’s just odd because you would think if it’s a legal issue, we would not be able to edit the name. And if it’s a technical issue or concern about numbers being duplicated on the same team, it does seem like the CPU already has the ability to change the numbers of players on the teams.

In other words, it doesn’t quite pass the smell test on legal or technical fronts. Again, maybe the legal issue is they worry about you being able to edit both the number and name and so they let us have the more important one in their eyes (editing names). But whatever the reasoning might be, it’s a bummer. I have no idea if this is something that can be patched, but Not The Expert did hop on Reddit today and provide some more insight:

I have told them several times that the no number thing is bizarre. I think the reasoning they told me is NIL fears, but I don’t really think that makes sense. They know people aren’t happy about it. I’m not sure if it will be in the final build or not. I wonder if someone above the devs is making them restrict things, but I have no way of confirming that. The devs do want customization for people it is all just legal fears

If it is purely legal concerns, then fair enough, I just hope EA at least confirms it at some point. That said, I’m way more lenient about this stuff in year one because I want this series to exist and not get caught up in any new lawsuits. At the same time, I do appreciate the gravity of this detail for some who love editing rosters and that’s why I at least hope EA clarifies what’s going on here.

I don’t know if we’ll get an answer from EA during this hype window, especially if it’s a negative answer, but we do think it’s good to at least highlight this as early as possible so it maybe can be patched if it’s just an oversight.
