Jersey numbers are one of the most iconic aspects for any athlete. From Cristiano Ronaldo’s 7 to Jackie Robinson’s iconic 42, jersey numbers have become a massive part of every sport. So, be it EA FC 25, Madden, or MLB The Show, players want to be able to choose their own jersey numbers. Fortunately, MLB The Show 25 gives players great freedom in this department.
In select game modes, you can choose a jersey number of your liking and live out your MLB fantasy. However, this comes with some limitations as well. In this article, we’ll cover everything related to changing your jersey numbers in different game modes of MLB The Show 25.
Is Your Jersey Number Customizable?

Yes, you can customize your jersey number, but only in the Road To The Show game mode. Road To The Show allows players to create a new character and choose their career path. Since you’re controlling your custom player, you can choose your jersey number. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Main Menu in Road To The Show.
- Head over to the Ballplayer section and click on General Info in the Appearance tab.
- Scroll down until you see the Jersey number option.
- Choose whichever number you want and back out to save it.
- Your jersey number will be updated! (This isn’t a one-time thing. You can change it whenever you want.)
While changing your jersey number is pretty simple, there are some rules regarding what number you can choose, with some numbers being unavailable. Let’s take a look at why this is the case.
Game Automatically Changes Number
Some of you may be facing this issue, and it is definitely frustrating. This happens because the number you’ve chosen is restricted. Here are the reasons behind it.
- The team you’re with has retired that number.
- There’s a prominent active player on the team with the same number.
If either of these is the case, your number will automatically be reverted or changed randomly. While this can be disappointing, you can always choose that number with a different team.
Teams often retire numbers in honor of retired players to preserve their legacies. This is a trend amongst all sports to reflect the player’s contributions to the team. The second reason is self-explanatory: two players on the same team cannot have the same number. If the other player has more seniority or popularity than you, they will be given preference.
One thing to take into account is that these rules only apply in the Major Leagues. Since MLB The Show 25: RTTS begins your career from high school, you’re free to pick any number in the Minors.
Can You Change Jersey Numbers In Franchise Or Diamond Dynasty?
Unfortunately, no. The jersey numbers in both Franchise mode and Diamond Dynasty mode are locked in. In these game modes, you can’t change jersey numbers since you’re in control of an entire team and not a single character, unlike RTTS.
That said, if you bring in a player with the same jersey number as an existing player on your team, the game will automatically switch the new player’s number. This is to avoid any duplicate numbers on your team. Other than that, there’s not much number customization in either of these modes.
