The first of several Feature Premieres debuted on February 15. Our first real dive into MLB The Show 24, the initial Feature Premiere was focused on Negro Leagues Season 2 Storylines.
A huge hit in MLB The Show 23, Storylines returns for a second season with a wide arrange of new content while building off the successful implementation last year. This Feature Premiere didn’t unveil a lot of new information, but it was an entertaining watch as we got to listen to four passionate folks talk about the project and how it relates to the game.
Let’s talk about the game-centric items.
MLB The Show 24 – Negro Leagues Storylines Season 2
Content Structure
For the most part, it sounds like Storylines Season 2 will be very similar to Season 1 in terms of content structure. We know there will be more Moments highlighting the specific stories discussed in the mode. However, there were a few new details worth highlighting.
A big detail is that the legends featured in Storylines Season 2 will be released in staggered content drops. There will be four legends available within the mode at launch, with three more legends released two weeks later. The final batch of three legends will then release two weeks after that resulting in a total of 10 legends within the mode. This is an interesting change compared to last year, which should help pace the mode. It was arguably the best part of MLB The Show 23, but once you completed Storylines it was just kind of done.
Another interesting detail is that Moments within Storylines Season 2 will be skippable, allowing players to progress through the stories being told. It wasn’t made clear if this means you can skip the Moments and still unlock any content available, but being able to move past a Moment to continue learning is a nice touch. Anyone struggling with the Moments can use it as a break before diving back in.
A few other worthy tidbits is the implementation of a new and improved video presentation style. The production was topnotch last year, so if any work was invested in that area then it should be even better. Finally, it was stated that defensive Moments will be in Storylines this year. Dust off those gloves and get ready to field some grounders.
Legends
SDS revealed four legends that will be featured in Storylines on social media within the last couple days.
Hank Aaron, Buck Leonard, Josh Gibson, and Toni Stone will be the first four legends featured in Storylines Season 2. Aaron, Leonard, and Gibson are all Hall of Famers while Toni Stone was the very first woman to play in the Negro Leagues on a regular basis. Unsurprisingly, she is also the first woman to ever appear in MLB The Show.
Speaking of legends, it was also confirmed that all legends from Storylines Season 1 will return in MLB The Show 24. Whether they appear in Storylines or will simply be available in Diamond Dynasty is something we’ll learn in due time.
We will learn at a later date who the new legends will be for the post-launch updates.
Stadiums
History buffs will appreciate that a redesigned version of Forbes Field will appear in MLB The Show 24. This version features some specific updates to right field. Additionally, it was announced that we’d be getting at least one new stadium: Greenlee Field. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Greenlee Field was home to the Pittsburgh Crawfords who will be featured prominently in this season of Storylines.
It wasn’t stated if we’d get more new stadiums, but there will be at least one new addition.
Uniforms
Three Negro League teams will receive multiple uniforms. The Indianapolis Clowns will have three unique jerseys in the game, the Pittsburgh Crawfords will have four uniforms, and the Homestead Grays will feature six unique uniforms. The new uniform technology used last year really brought the Negro League uniforms to life, so seeing some new threads again this year should be a treat.
Bottom Line
While there wasn’t a ton of information, we did get some relevant details about Storylines Season 2. There was a little bit of gameplay included showcasing each announced legend within the mode. Beyond that, anyone looking for major news might come away disappointed. However, I think it’s important to remember how unbelievably cool Storylines is and having a chance to play through the mode again with new legends will surely be a highlight of MLB The Show 24.
MLB The Show 24 will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on March 19. Available for pre-order now. Select pre-orders include Early Access beginning on March 15.
