With Codemasters’ Grid Legends ready to drop on February 25, the developers were kind enough to allow me to look behind the curtain and test out the retooled career mode found in the game. I was hoping the Grid Legends career mode felt more like what the former TOCAseries used to deliver, with the focus being placed on locations and cars. I was a massive fan of the TOCA series — and still am. While the Grid franchise may just be a descendant of that series, I will always connect the two in some form, so my hopes for the new career mode in Grid Legends were as high as ever.
As racing fans watched the year of 2021 slip away, there were some good, some great, some average, and some downright disappointments in the racing genre. With our 2022 racing games preview, it’s time to start figuring out what to get hyped for all over again. Although 2021 finished off with a couple titles that were a disappointment for myriad reasons, there is no denying that both causal and hardcore racing fans had an abundance of options in 2021. If you followed the Operation Sports Game of the Year Awards, then you already know the stout competition that was vying for awards, with Forza Horizon 5 winning the hardware (in multiple categories).
FIFA is one of the most patched console games out. Dating back to FIFA 15, EA steadily increased the number of title updates from seven to over 20 for FIFA 21. This year, we’re already on title update #4 with three title updates sprinkled in as well (this article will serve as my FIFA 22 Title Update 4 impressions). While fixing bugs are an obvious target of these updates, there are usually several gameplay changes that can alter gameplay, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. Even this year’s FIFA 22 plays differently than when it was released, which also varies from the beta versions given out way back when. Not all title updates are important, which is why I don’t cover all of them here on Operation Sports, but Title Update #4 appears to have some significant updates to both gameplay and career mode.
Long before the existence of a Disc Jam, there was a game found only in arcades called Windjammers that first explored the same sort of framework. Released back in 1994, it saw players engage in a one-on-one match where they toss a disc back and forth across a net while trying to confuse the opponent and gain points by having the disc bounce back and forth from one wall to another before scoring like you would in air hockey. Flash forward to today where Windjammers 2, a sequel developed and published by Dotemu, is now available to play on consoles and PC to help fuel nostalgia for those who spent hours huddled around the original in the arcade or introduce newcomers who weren’t around for the original.
