A lot of major sports games come in to this cycle with something to prove coming off a down year, so we’re hopeful that some franchises will have a comeback year while others will simply be looking to keep the momentum going. Here are some of the most anticipated sports games that are due to come out in 2025.

The Most Anticipated Sports Games Of 2025

MLB The Show 25

Release date: March 18, 2025

Starting us off is MLB The Show 25, the latest entry in the long-running MLB The Show series.

MLB The Show is coming off a bit of a down year in 2024. Though the game at its base level remains solid, The Show players crave a bit more when it comes to the depth of its single-player modes as well as an overhaul to how Diamond Dynasty treats things such as packs and rewards.

Luckily, MLB The Show 25 seems to have gotten off on the right foot, having announced that baseball at both the high school and college levels will be featured. The game will also be leaving most old-gen platforms and will instead be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch platforms, which hopefully leads to better graphics and deeper features.

There are still plenty of reasons to be skeptical about how many improvements will be made, especially for those who will no longer have access to it through Game Pass. But so far, the hype train for MLB The Show 25 has done its job.

Football Manager 25

Release date: March 2025

Easily the most popular and celebrated sports management sim in the world, Football Manager 25 has promised to deliver a ton of upgrades. But the buildup to the latest entry in the Football Manager series has been somewhat ominous.

FM25 will mark the first year the series will be using the Unity engine, an engine popular in the mobile gaming market and supposedly will give the game better graphics. But given its delay from November 2024 to March 2025, fans of the series are justifiably concerned about the quality of the game come its release.

Football Manager 25 is certainly a game that many people will be keeping an eye on to see if Sports Interactive can deliver either a huge hit or an all-time flop.

PGA Tour 2K25

Release date: February 28, 2025

After a three-year layoff for the series, 2K Games will be releasing PGA Tour 2K25 in late February. And so far, it looks pretty darn good.

For the first time, the series will include several of the majors such as the PGA Championship (though no Masters); a ton of courses both at release and post-launch, and improvements to swing mechanics. All of these are welcome changes to an already decent formula.

PGA Tour 2K23 wasn’t without its flaws, but it was still overall a good game. And if the team at 2K can find a way to build upon the foundation it has already built, then golf-loving gamers are in for a treat come February.

WWE 2K25

Release date: March 14, 2025

Even as a huge pro wrestling fan, putting a WWE game on a list of hotly anticipated sports games feels a bit weird. But, wrestling is cool again, and WWE is riding high in terms of live attendance, gate receipts, and media attention. And thus, WWE 2K25 is going to have a lot riding on it.

WWE 2K25 has been promoted to absolute perfection, to say the very least. In the lead-up to its release, the game has announced highly desired features such as new match types including Bloodline Rules, as well as improvements to GM Mode, Universe Mode, and a new multiplayer mode called The Island that is seemingly based on NBA 2K’s The City.

Now that wrestling is in a boom period, WWE 2K25 will come with some big expectations (especially after WWE 2K24 was solid as well). We’ll see if those expectations are met come March.

College Football 26

Release date: Summer 2025

College Football 25 took the sports world by storm in 2024. Not only was it beloved by the Operation Sports community, but gamers all over the United States flocked to give the first college football game in over a decade a try. In fact, CFB finished as the second-highest selling game in the US for 2024, behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

And inevitably, gamers will be looking toward the eventual release of College Football 26, which is scheduled for a release this summer. And already, the hype train has begun.

Earlier this month, Operation Sports published our wishlist for College Football 26, which was well received. In the forums, several OS users have talked about what they want to see from the next CFB title, be it custom stadiums, dynamic weather, or tweaks to recruiting.

Needless to say, we’re stoked to see what CFB 26 brings and how it improves on what was a great CFB 25. It feels strange to say, but Madden now needs to find a way to grab some attention back from its in-house rival.
